Charges have been filed against Moffat County resident Daniel Martin for animal cruelty following an investigation that led to the seizure of 90 bison last month by the Moffat County Sheriff’s Department and the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection.
Martin has been charged with 89 counts of cruelty to animals-neglect/mistreatment of bison, and two counts of cruelty to animals-neglect/mistreatment of mules according to a release from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

On May 28, Moffat County Court found that probable cause existed for the seizure of the animals after testimony from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office and the Colorado Bureau of Animal Protection.
All animals seized in this case have been released to the impounding agency, after Daniel Martin was unable to pay for cost and care of the animals —a fee that the Moffat County Court found to be “reasonable, and fair.”
Editor’s note: Every person accused of a crime is presumed to be innocent unless and until their guilt is established beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
