Democratic incumbent Rep. Elizabeth Velasco was elected to a third term representing Colorado’s House District 57, defeating Republican challenger Russ Andrews.

The Associated Press called the race at 8:04 p.m. Velasco holds 63% of the vote as of 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Colorado Secretary of State.

“I’m very excited,” Velasco said about the win. “I’m grateful for all the voters here in our district. I know that it was a very difficult ballot; it was very full of all the things that we care about. So I’m very honored and excited for another term.”

House District 57 covers Garfield and Pitkin counties, in addition to the southwestern portion of Eagle County. The district is home to nearly 88,000 residents and has seen a voting shift toward the Democratic Party since district maps were redrawn in 2021.

Velasco, a 38-year-old Glenwood Springs Democrat, is currently serving her second term in the Colorado House of Representatives. She entered office in 2023 after defeating Republican incumbent Perry Will to flip the seat to blue, becoming the first Mexican-born state representative in Colorado.

Velasco has been focused primarily on passing legislation to improve environmental justice and worker protections. In her third term, Velasco said she would continue working to secure clean air and water for communities, as well as improving preparedness for natural disasters like wildfires.

Before district maps were redrawn in 2021, House District 57 had exclusively elected Republican representatives for nearly 40 years. The district’s voting patterns have since shifted toward the Democratic Party by 39 percentage points, according to data from MultiState, with the majority of residents voting for Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election. Velasco won her 2024 reelection bid by roughly 10 percentage points, defeating Republican challenger Caleb Waller.
