Authorities have identified the Craig police officer who shot a man during a Saturday incident.

The officer has been identified as Dalton Caudell, according to a Thursday news release from Craig police.

“Sgt. Caudell has been placed on administrative leave, per standard protocol, while the incident is under investigation by 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team,” states the news release.

At approximately 8:43 a.m. Saturday, Craig police officers responded to 730 Ashley Rd. following a report of a male subject armed with a handgun, according to a Saturday news release from Craig police.

“Shots were exchanged between the subject and law enforcement,” the Saturday release stated. “The subject was struck during the exchange, and officers immediately rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived on scene.”

According to the Saturday news release, the individual was transported to Memorial Regional Hospital in Craig, where he was stabilized before being flown to another medical facility for further treatment.

As of Thursday afternoon, the victim’s identity had not been released.

“The Craig Police Department is unable to provide further information in order to protect the integrity of the ongoing investigation. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available,” states the Thursday news release.

The news release did not specify who initiated the gunfire. Officials have not released any further details about the shooting.

According to the Moffat County Combined Courts clerk’s office, no arrests have been made and no charges related to the shooting have been filed.

The 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team is investigating the shooting, according to Craig police.

The Critical Incident Response Team is an independent, multi-agency group responsible for conducting “thorough and impartial investigations into critical incidents involving law enforcement” in Moffat, Routt and Grand counties.

On Monday, Police Chief Mike Cochran said the Craig Police Department is not involved with the investigation related to Saturday’s shooting, per Critical Incident Response Team protocol.

Cochran has directed all questions regarding the shooting to the Grand County Sheriff’s Office, the agency heading up the investigation.

“Unfortunately, there are no additional details that can be released at this time,” stated the Grand County Sheriff’s Office in a Thursday email.

Steamboat Pilot & Today staff requested supplemental reports regarding the incident from the Steamboat Springs Police Department. However, Steamboat Police Chief Mark Beckett stated the supplemental reports will not be released while the investigation remains active.

This is a developing story. More information will be reported as it becomes available.
