With some of their athletes suffering some wounds in the process, Moffat County track and field earned some meaningful outcomes as a result.

The MCHS boys took third and the girls tied for 11th at the North Fork Invitational on Saturday in Hotchkiss.

The boys claimed a win in the 4×200-meter relay with senior Jimi Jimenez, junior Andrew Duran and seniors Evan Beaver and Zeke Alcantar clocking in at 1 minute, 32 seconds for the best time ever in the meet’s history.

“I was talking to the guy who was announcing at the meet, and he said it hadn’t been broken in about 20 years,” Jimenez said.

The relay didn’t exactly go as smoothly as planned, he added, although what could have been a drop on the final handoff ultimately helped them shave off extra time, as Beaver finished his leg of the race with some road rash on his shoulder and hand after hitting the track.

“Zeke took off super-fast and super-early, and Beaver needed to get that bigger stride to get him the baton,” Jimenez said. “That wasn’t quite enough, so he dived to get Zeke the baton, and if he didn’t, we wouldn’t have won that race.”

The Bulldogs’ 4×800 relay also earned some gold as seniors Carson Laehr, Owen Gifford, freshman Zach Womble and sophomore Haven Carr finished 12 seconds faster than the next group at 9:13.

Gifford went on to win by nearly the same increment in the 3,200 run, earning a time of 11:12 in the two-mile event.

Jimenez, Duran, Beaver and Alcantar also took the silver in the 4×100, less than a half-second away from first.

Alcantar also took fourth in the 100 dash and sixth in the 400, with Duran seventh in the 100 and ninth in the 200, just ahead of Jimenez in 10th.

“The relays are a lot more fun than the open,” Jimenez said. “Those are a lot harder and take a lot more talent.”

Freshman Jesse Terry took sixth in the mile, Carr was fifth and Womble sixth in the two-mile, and the foursome of Quinn Allen, Justin Fraipont, Terry and Jose Silva were seventh in the 4×400.

Off the track, Beaver hit a new personal record of 6 feet, 1 inch to win the high jump, with junior Wyatt Tucker close behind in second at 5-8. Senior Hudson Jones took fourth in the triple jump at 39-8.

The Bulldog girls team had some stronger results on the field as far as placement, with sophomore Teryn Carter taking bronze in the triple jump by hitting a new personal record of 30-3. She also hit a new best in the long jump (14-3.25), placing sixth right behind her teammate, junior Caitlyn Adams, who took fifth at 14-4.75.

Adams also served as the anchor for the 4×100 relay, as she, Camila Nuñez, Kimber Hume and Nancy Nuñez placed eighth at 56.1 seconds. Adams, Hume, Danna Montanez and Camila Nuñez saw the same placement in the 4×200 with a time of 2:00.

MCHS track is slated to compete at this weekend’s Mickey Dunn Invite in Grand Junction. Jimenez noted that the early success bodes well for the relays in particular.

“It’s nice to run this fast early in the season because that means we’ll only be getting better toward the end of it.”
