The scream could be heard from the back nine, as 13-year-old Nike Cleverly sunk a birdie putt on the fourth hole of the Yampa Valley Golf course.
“It was two feet from the pin, and I just putted it in,” Cleverly said.
That milestone made the way for Cleverly to finish first in the 13- and 14-year-old age group Tuesday at the Yampa River Junior Golf Classic.
“It was really fun out there today,” Cleverly said. “It didn’t really feel like a competition, because I was golfing with my friends.”
Cleverly, who has practiced with the Moffat County High School, shot consistently on Tuesday, finishing the nine-hole tournament with a 64.
“I keep getting the same score every time I play,” she said. “Last year at the tournament I got third place, and this year I got a plaque for finishing first.”
Cleverly and the other girls she golfed with credit their parents for getting them interested in golf.
Another local junior golfer, Ryan Lueck, didn’t place as high as last year, but he was still excited to be there.
“I like golf, because it’s something anyone can do, and it’s not very hard,” the 8-year-old said. “Last year when I golfed, I got second.”
This time around Lueck shot a 36, which was five shots from third place, in the group for 7- to 9-year-olds.
In the group for girls ages 7 to 9, Josey King, 8, took home top honors. She shot a 43 in four holes of play.
“I had fun,” King said. “I did good putting.”
The Junior Golf Classic hosted 76 youth golfers on the Yampa Valley course throughout the morning, and awarded prizes for first through third places.
