Wranglers right fit at rodeo

Don’t bother asking the Professional Rodeo Cowboys of America whether they prefer Wranglers.

The answer is “yes.” Without question.

For Steve Deyo, who was born and bred in Craig, it’s been nothing but Wranglers for the last quarter century.

“I have 30 or 40 pair. That’s all I wear,” Deyo said. “It’s the way they’re made. In the saddle, there’s room in the legs and seat for riding.”

It also doesn’t hurt that Wrangler is a sponsor of the PRCA, and Deyo is a member and goes to every rodeo he can.

“I don’t own a pair of dress pants,” Deyo said. “My Wranglers are good anywhere in Craig.”

When asked why cowboys always choose Wranglers, Luann Wallace, a Collbran resident and a gal familiar with ropin’ and ridin’, was quick to respond.

“Because girls like them,” she said.

Wallace grew up on a cattle ranch, and she said in her family, rodeo is passed down from generation to generation.

Her friend, 15 year-old Megan Hill, agrees with Wallace about Wranglers.

“It’s the way they’re cut,” Hill said. “They’re tight.”

Hill is a barrel racer and was wearing Wranglers at the Ride & Tie Rodeo on Saturday in Craig. She said she’s been a Wrangler fan for a long time.

Josh Martinez is an Emergency Medical Technician, who rode shotgun in the ambulance at Saturday’s rodeo. He says he knows why Wranglers are popular.

“It’s like a cowboy hat or something,” Martinez said. “It’s part of the uniform.”

Martinez said he wears Levi’s, but his partner driving the ambulance is a Carhart man.

“I’ve worn Wranglers before,” said ambulance driver Jim Kurz. “That’s just because they’re comfortable. Now there are lots of comfortable pants out there.”

Richard L. Dunckley Jr. was busy watching his 9-month-old son, Cody, on Saturday, and didn’t have much time to talk pants.

He said he wore Levi’s back in high school in Kentucky. Dunckley, who was born in Hayden and has been in Craig since 1989, now wears Wranglers “most of the time.”

For Kuersten Etcheverry, of Collbran, the question of what jeans are preferred is an easy answer. Her 5-year-old son, Cuay, is sporting Wrangler jeans and a shirt with the words “Wrangler,” written over the pocket and down one arm.

When asked whether her husband wears Wranglers, she replies, “Oh yeah. And they look good.” Etcheverry’s husband was a bull-rider at the Saturday rodeo and earned his way into the money.

Although 9-year-old Johnathon Uncapher is wearing Wranglers, he says he sometimes slips on a pair of Levi’s. Not so, for his brother, 10 year-old Dakota.

“I pretty much wear only Wranglers,” he said.
