Update: Iron Fire grows to more than 5,500 acres

UPDATE 6:30 p.m. Friday: The Iron Fire is now estimated to have grown in size to more than 5,500 acres. Crews are working to contain the fire with several air crews including eight small engine air tankers and two helicopters, as well as Moffat County Fire engines, the Bureau of Land Management and several Moffat County motor graders.

Moffat County residents are being asked to avoid an area north of Craig due to an active wildfire.

The Iron Fire is burning near Moffat County Roads 5 and 17, according to the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, which is battling the blaze alongside Craig Fire and the Bureau of Land Management.

In an update provided just before 4 p.m. Friday, the sheriff’s office said the fire has grown to an estimated 170 acres and is being fed by tall grass and sagebrush in an area that previously burned in 2018.

The cause of the current fire has yet to be determined.

The sheriff’s office warned that high winds are driving the fire north from Moffat County Road 17.
