Wildfire grows to an estimated 400 acres; US 40 reopened

A wildfire closed U.S. 40 west from Moffat County Road 15 to County Road 17 of Craig on Wednesday.

U.S. Highway 40 has reopened to all traffic.

According to the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was estimated at about 400 acres at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday, and the cause is undetermined. No structures are currently threatened by the fire.



The fire appears to be about three or four miles away from the Western Knolls subdivision, and there are a handful of homes in the area, though the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office reported at 9:15 p.m. Wednesday that no structures were being threatened.

According to the sheriff’s office, the blaze was initially estimated at about 10 acres. By 6:20 p.m., the sheriff’s office reported the fire had grown to an estimated 150 acres. At 6:53 p.m., it was up to about 300 acres.



Moffat County Sheriff’s Office wildfire crews along with Moffat County Road and Bridge, the Bureau of Land Management, Craig Fire and aircraft are fighting the wildland fire. There will be fire crews working in the area Thursday.
