The Twelve Fire in western Moffat County was about 80% contained as of Sunday afternoon, according to a report from the National Interagency Fire Center. The fire has not spread since Friday, totaling 4,287 acres.

Around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, U.S. Highway 40 was closed in both directions between mile markers 60 and 11 due to the fire. At midnight Thursday, U.S. 40 was reopened in both directions. Speed reductions were established due to the ongoing fire.

The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office reminds drivers to stay alert and take appropriate safety measures, such as driving slowly, securing towing chains and equipment to prevent sparks, refraining from throwing items out of a vehicle and reporting dragging chains to law enforcement.

U.S. 40 and previously other closed roads remained open as of Monday morning with speed reductions still in place, according to the sheriff’s office.

The fire was estimated to cover about 1,000 acres Thursday morning, then spread over 3,000 acres between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday. At that point, there was zero percent containment reported.

Moffat County was put under a red flag warning from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday. Additionally, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions went into effect on Thursday and remain in effect until further notice.

“Please follow all restrictions to help prevent additional wildfires,” a statement from the sheriff’s office said.
