MCHS girls golfers look to pick up where they left off
After a nine-day hiatus, the Moffat County High School girls golf team travels to Black Canyon Golf Course in Montrose today.
The Bulldogs placed second out of 12 teams April 10 at the Rifle Invitational, and were led by senior Amber Nicholson’s third-place finish.
MCHS coach Ann Marie Hamilton said of Black Canyon, “It’s just a fair course and the weather is supposed to be real nice, which is a bonus.
“Actually, it’s a good course for these kids, because it’s a little shorter and easier for them.”
Junior Meghan Innes said today’s course is one of her favorites, especially after it played host to the 4A state championships her freshman year.
“It is a fairly short course,” Innes said. “Some of the par 5s you can get on in two. I remember there is water in front of the green on number 17, and number 18 has a lot of out of bounds to the right side of the tee off. If you play them smart you will be OK.”
Nicholson, one of the consistent leaders of this year’s squad and a state returnee, said there are a lot of similarities between Black Canyon and Yampa Valley Golf Course, the host course for MCHS.
“A lot of the holes on the front nine are surrounded by trees,” Nicholson said. “On the back nine, instead of having wildlife around you, you have a lot of houses. Last year I think I shot in the 90s, but this summer during an ACE tournament I shot a 77.”
Hamilton said health-wise the team is doing “really good” and they are excited about playing again.
“We are looking to go out and get a W,” Hamilton said.
Innes said she played last weekend and hopes the improvement will be reflected in today’s tournament.
“I played both Saturday and Sunday and was doing pretty good,” she said. “I was hitting the ball pretty consistently, and I hope that will help today.”
