Student urges residents to vote ‘no’ on Amendment 31
To the Editor:
I am a 10 year old girl and I go to school at Pioneer Elementary, a bilingual school in Lafayette.
My school is one of the schools that would be affected by the proposed English immersion program. Our school is half native-Spanish and half native-English, but we all learn to read and write in both languages by the 5th grade.
Because of Amendment 31, I have heard that some adults think that native-Spanish speakers (or other first languages) don’t learn enough English to be able to communicate with the people around us.
That is just not true.
I am fluent in English and Spanish because of bilingual education (which I began in Argentina and then continued here in Colorado), and so are all my classmates! I also think everyone should think how nice it would be to speak more than one language. Or how nice it would be to be able to travel around the world and be able to communicate with people from different cultures!
We are asking you to PLEASE cooperate to keep Colorado a multi-cultural state. Please listen to us kids and vote No on Amendment 31!
