PETA targets circus in Craig
The national animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals has been dogging Carson & Barnes Circus as they tour the country.
Although PETA doesn’t intend to protest or picket today’s circus at the Moffat County Fairgrounds, it is attempting to dissuade local organizers from inviting the circus back to Craig.
“We are asking organizations to reconsider hosting circuses in the future, because animals in circuses lead such miserable, deprived lives,” said Nicole Meyer, an elephant specialist with PETA.
PETA alleges Carson & Barnes abuses animals by forcing them to travel long distances and making them perform manual labor.
Circus officials couldn’t be reached for comment late Monday, but in a statement contained in a Carson & Barnes press kit, the circus company says its reliance on animals helps the environment
“Many of Carson & Barnes’ circus animals are kept busy doing work that would otherwise be done by heavy equipment which burns fossil fuels. The fact that the circus brings its menagerie direct to your community, instead of you driving to a large city zoo far away, is an additional energy saver,” the circus release states.
Circus performances will be held at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. today.
