Museum fetes book store opening
The Museum of Northwest Colorado celebrated the grand opening of Queen Ann Book Store and the new Museum Gallery Store on Saturday.
After falling on hard times when its county funded budget was cut, the museum has gone into business to generate operating and personnel revenue.
As Cedar Mountain Strings played, guests viewed the photography of Karl W. Hoffman, displayed on the museum’s second floor.
It’s the museum’s first all-digital photography exhibit. The exhibit will run through the end of autumn. All the photos are for sale, and proceeds will go to the museum.
By the entrance of Queen Ann’s Bookstore, Hoffman’s jewelry is displayed. The museum receives a commission for selling Hoffman’s work.
Museum management team Jan Gerber and Dan Davidson hope the museum’s revenue will increase with the new bookstore. They will use the income to hire a part-time or full-time staff member. They said they wanted to provide a service to the community. Earlier this year, Gerber said that since the closure of On The Shelf, Craig has been short one bookstore.
Because the museum bookstore didn’t want to compete with On The Shelf, Gerber said the closure did influence the opening of Queen Anne’s, because they can offer the community a more complete bookstore.
“The people (currently) coming through the gift store are visitors looking at the museum,” Davidson said. “We want to work on more of a local market.”
The new bookstore sells books ranging from historical texts to Louis L’Amour novels.
The museum will continue to be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays this fall , Gerber said.
