Murder-suicide suspected in 2 Jamestown deaths

Associated Press

(AP) — Boulder County sheriff’s investigators say they believe a single mother whose body was found in Jamestown in September was sexually assaulted and killed by a sex offender who then killed himself.

County Coroner Emma Hall said Tuesday that 30-year-old Solange Haikkala died of blunt force trauma to the neck. Her body was found in her home Sept. 10, a day after she had attended a gathering that 35-year-old Thomas Altimus also attended. Altimus was found dead a few days later in a wooded area.

Hall said Tuesday that Altimus died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

Sheriff’s investigators say DNA taken from Haikkala’s body was conclusively linked to Altimus. They say evidence suggests Altimus sexually assaulted and killed Haikkala.
