With new faces and old alike filling out their lineup, Moffat County cross country teams got their opening results in the books Friday evening.

The Fraser Valley Invitational was an early test at high altitude for the Bulldogs and their competitors with a race at 9,000 feet hosted by Middle Park High School.

The MCHS boys finished third as a group and the girls fourth.

While Longmont handily won the guys 5K with all five scoring runners in the top 10, junior Haven Carr and freshman Zach Womble also were in the first big wave of finishers, with Carr fourth at 18:52 and Womble eighth at 19:20.4.

Junior Brady Nunez ranked 14th with Quinn Allen, Ryun Pressgrove and Daniel Gomez 29th through 31st, senior Travis LeFevre 44th and freshman Christian Mulero Lopez at 55.

In the girls race, MoCo freshman Sydney Wattles set the pace in her first high school event, placing fifth (23:05.3) with senior Josefina Kuberry in ninth (24:02.4). Bulldog seniors Alyssa LeWarne and Hannah Kilpatrick were 19th and 28th, respectively, while freshman Jaxsyn Severson rounded out scoring in 31st with sophomore Haley Duran at 42.

As part of the Fraser Valley event, a junior high two-mile race saw Craig Middle School’s Jonas Pressgrove repeat his success from last season, finishing first overall and 32 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor at 13:40.7. CMS boys took second as a group, with scoring runners including Kaden Kuberry at 15th, Andrew Johnson 17th, Jetten Weeldreyer 24th and Jhafeth Martin-Duran 32.

CMS girls also took second place, with Cheyenne Gray, Melany Hernandez and Ella Fross placing seventh through ninth, followed by Piper Schnackenberg in 11th and Finley Pressgrove 14th.

MCHS cross country will next run Sept. 7 at Connected Lakes State Park, hosted by Grand Junction High School, while CMS will run at Steamboat Springs the same day.
