Moffat County wrestlers stick it out at Maverick Duals

The competition was challenging and lengthy Saturday as Moffat County boys wrestling got back into the demands of the season.

The Bulldog boys went 2-3 as a team during the Colorado Mesa University Maverick Duals this past weekend in Grand Junction.

The wins were 36-27 over Gunnison and 39-30 over Olathe, while the Bulldogs narrowly fell to North Fork 36-33. Losses to traditionally powerful teams Cedaredge (48-28) and Montrose (66-18) were a little more trying as the Bulldogs had several uncontested weights working against them.

MoCo coaches cycled in multiple athletes at various weights to see how they would fare, with senior Eli Fredrickson winning all three of his matches in the 138-pound class.

Junior Zach Hedman won his lone match with a 17-second pin against Olathe in the 175 bracket.

Junior Kaeden Martinez went 4-1 at 144, with all of his wins by fall, while senior Cyrus Goldsmith saw the same record at 165 with only a loss to Montrose. Junior Kaleb Duzik (190) also went 4-1 with a loss to Gunnison.

Sharing duties at 150, senior Aron Aguilar and junior Jon Yapoujian went 2-1 and 1-1, respectively, while senior Blake Hill was 3-1 at 175.

The results were rounded out by Talus Folks 3-2 at 106, Blake Tupa 0-5 (126), Haven Carr 1-4 (132), Tate Green 0-2 (138), and Colt Call 1-4 (157).

MCHS boys will compete at the Western Slope Showdown this weekend in Montrose, while Bulldog girls wrestling will be at the Soroco Tournament.
