Moffat County soccer team gives up another lead in loss

David Pressgrove

Maybe the Moffat County boys soccer team should try playing from behind.

For the third time in as many games, the Bulldogs forfeited a lead and came out with a loss.

The latest loss may have been the toughest in a 4-3 defeat to Rifle.

“This one was a heartbreaker,” coach Jeff Hammond said. “The guys showed me a lot, though, and I’m proud of them.”

Moffat went up 3-0 in the first half behind one goal from senior Schuyler Hammond and two from sophomore Tyler Shevling. The Bears rallied with three goals in the second half.

“I made some adjustments in the second half, and they were the wrong adjustments,” coach Hammond said. “I didn’t expect us to shut Rifle down like we did, and I guess I got too comfortable.”

The Bears’ Stewart Stapleton had a hat trick, including the golden goal for the Bears, who improved to 5-1 and 2-1 in the Western Slope League.

Moffat County now has led 3-1, 1-0 and 3-0 this season but is 0-3 to show for it.

“I think with a lead we get too comfortable,” coach Hammond said. “Then, by the time we get our wits about us, it’s a little too late.”

The Bulldogs travel to Eagle Valley, 0-2-1, on Saturday to try to get their wits back about them.
