Moffat County Road 29/Routt County Road 86 towards Elkhead Reservoir closes after a vehicle fire spreads to wildland

Moffat County Road 29, which is also Routt County Road 86, has been closed in both directions due to a vehicle fire. The road closure is between Highway 40 and Elkhead Lake.

The closure comes after a semi-truck hauling hay caught on fire. The flames then spread to the adjacent hill, becoming a wildland fire.

A facebook post from the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office asks residents to avoid the area to allow the first responders on scene space to work.

It is unknown when the road will reopen, but Routt County Road 78 north of Hayden is recommended as an alternate route to Elkhead lake.
