MCHS second best golf team in snow
The Moffat County High School girls golf defeated 10 of 12 teams Tuesday at the Rifle Invitational.
And Mother Nature too.
Tournament play was temp—-orarily suspended after 90 minutes of play due to blowing snow and hail-covered greens.
“It would bounce all over, and what do you do at that point?” coach Ann Marie Hamilton said.
“But the girls are tough cookies — you have to give them credit.”
Senior Amber Nicholson led the Bulldogs with a round of 89, good for third place.
“The wind was taking my ball and taking it everywhere,” Nicholson said. “Usually putting is my strong point, but today I really struggled with it. I don’t know what it is. I missed one birdie putt, and I think that affected my confidence.”
Junior Meghan Innes carded a 90 for fourth place. Both girls received medals for their top-5 finishes.
Freshman Heather Nich-
olson shot a 109 to round out the MCHS scoring.
Senior Melissa Ellgen (130) and junior Clarissa Dilldine (137) also played at the varsity level, but in high school, the top three scores calculate in the final tally.
Senior Emily Krogman (127) and junior Elizabeth Hepworth (133) played junior varsity.
Hamilton said, considering the weather and cold circumstances, the team didn’t do too badly.
“They played about average,” Hamilton said. “I thought Heather shot better than what she had been, but not quite as good as today. I think the cold got to them today.”
MCHS travels to Black Canyon Golf Course in Montrose at 9 a.m. April 19.
