Lt. Gov. Garcia to attend White House announcement
Denver — (AP) — Colorado’s lieutenant governor will be at the White House Friday when President Barack Obama discusses changes to the once-lauded No Child Left Behind law.
Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia is among the guests for the announcement. The Obama administration is offering states a way around provisions of the Bush-era education law that the administration says have become unintentional barriers to learning.
The administration says it is acting because Congress has been slow to address the issues by rewriting the law.
Last week, Colorado’s Board of Education signaled it would join other states in seeking waivers from parts of the law. States that want waivers are still required to show they’re enacting standards to prepare students for college and careers and making teachers and principals more accountable.
