Colorado Parks and Wildlife/Wayne D. Lewis

Big game hunting licenses not sold from the primary and secondary draws will go on sale at 9 a.m. Aug. 5.

Over-the-counter licenses for elk, bear, archery pronghorn and whitetail deer will be available at the same time.

To acquire a license, hunters can visit CPWShop.com, call 1-800-244-5613, or show up in-person at CPW offices.

Available licenses include:

  • Limited licenses left over after the primary and secondary draws for elk, deer, pronghorn and bear
  • Limited elk, deer, pronghorn and bear licenses that someone drew but surrendered or did not pay for during the secondary draw that took fewer than five resident preference points to draw
  • Limited licenses that were returned for refund/preference point restoration since the opening of the secondary draw but prior to July 30 and took fewer than five resident preference points to draw
  • OTC licenses for elk, archery pronghorn, whitetail deer and bear

Sales day prep

Colorado Parks and Wildlife recommends logging into the online system prior to sales day to ensure information such as email and mailing address are up-to-date. Any questions regarding problems getting into an account should be directed to wildlife.cpwinfo@state.co.us

Hunters are encouraged to have hunt codes and credit/debit card numbers ready on sales day.

Those who call the CPW sales line for the purchase should be prepared for long wait times and have all information ready to relay over the phone. Sales line representatives will be unable to search for hunt codes themselves.

After a hunt code is entered and confirmed online, that license will be held in the hunter’s cart for 15 minutes, or until the transaction is complete. If time expires, the license will be released to another customer. Hunters should keep the hold system in mind while attempting to purchase multiple licenses.

While licenses go on sale at 9 a.m., customers can log into their account starting at 8 a.m. Customers should not go further than the residency page until 9 a.m.

Once entered in the queue, browsers need to remain open and there should be no navigation away from the queue page. Navigating away from the queue page will require customers to re-enter at the back of the queue.

Hunters will be limited to one list A and one list B license, or two list B licenses, for each species.

Hunters can purchase an unlimited number of list C licenses which have no impact on list A or B license purchases. Those who received a list A license from the primary or secondary draw are eligible only for a list B or list C license.

Hunters who received a list B or list C license from the primary or secondary draw are eligible for either a list A, B or C license.

The online leftover list updates every five to 10 minutes, meaning some hunt codes may be listed as available despite having already been sold.

CPW suggests hunters purchase licenses online through CPWShop.com. For more information on the leftover list and OTC licenses, visit CPW.state.co.us/hunting/big-game/leftover-remaining-and-reissued-licenses

A preview list of additional licenses will go public on Aug. 12 as part of the license reissue process. Reissue license sales begin Aug. 13 at 11 a.m.
