A vehicle pursuit that began at a crash scene in Craig on Friday has prompted an investigation by the 14th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, according to a statement released by the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident began when a Moffat County sheriff’s deputy responded to a traffic collision near 1st and Ranney Street. While on site, a driver involved in the accident reversed into the deputy’s patrol car and sped away.

The deputy pursued the suspect, who then crashed on Moffat County Road 107 near Moffat County Road 139. The driver suffered serious injuries and was removed from the vehicle before being transported to Memorial Regional Hospital.

Per established protocol, the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office requested activation of the CIRT to ensure an independent investigation. The multi-agency team includes members from the Steamboat Springs Police Department, Craig Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, and the Routt, Grand and Moffat County Sheriff’s Offices.

Because the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office was involved, the Steamboat Springs Police Department is leading the investigation.

“The goal of the CIRT is to provide a thorough and impartial investigation and mitigate against the depletion of resources within any one agency,” the statement wrote. “This investigation is in its early stages, and the preliminary information provided is subject to change as more details emerge. CIRT investigators will continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses in the coming days and weeks.”

Findings will be submitted to the 14th Judicial District Attorney’s Office upon completion for review and further action, if needed. Updates will be released as appropriate.

“This investigation is in its early stages, and the preliminary information provided is subject to change as more details emerge. CIRT investigators will continue to collect evidence and interview witnesses in the coming days and weeks,” the statement said.
