Fun with a 5K: Top runners lauded for Craig jaunt

Before the hubbub of the Grand Olde West Days downtown street festival began, members of the Craig community were already up and running.

Monday morning's 5K Fun Run brought in 35 local runners seeking to tackle a three-mile course around town.

Organizer Karrie Booth, owner of the sponsoring Holistic Health & Fitness, said the turnout was encouraging.

"It was a little less than we had last year, but better than we had the year before that," she said. "We changed the course around a little from last year, and I'm not sure a lot of people knew about that or we might have gotten even more people signed up. We didn't shorten it, just moved it around a little for a little easier terrain."

The race started at Kinder Family Clinic and weaved through residential streets before coming to the top of Colorado Street and looping back down around to the clinic.

"It was a little hilly, but other than that everybody said they had a great run," Booth said. "It was great because we saw a whole bunch of kids there, a lot more than we had last year. I was surprised how well a lot of the kids did in our 5K because I don't think any of them had done any training. They just did it on a whim, and they all did great."

Booth acknowledged the fastest children runners, including 6-year-old Burke Henderson and 15-year-old Garrett Ferguson.

For the adults, Trini Loya finished ahead of everyone, clocking in at just under 22 minutes.

Top female runner Jennifer Pressgrove finished in 24 minutes.

Booth said she hoped to see families in the area making an effort to participate in regular running exercises to combat the rising concern of obesity in Moffat County.

"It's something they can all do together, and I think we need more of these kinds of things to get people and especially kids excited about it," she said. "Even now, all parents really need to do is just pick a race to run in because there are a lot of them around."

Just as important as getting kids interested and involved in running is getting them to take it seriously, Booth said.

"It's a good opportunity for parents to teach their kids how to set a goal and train for something and make it fun," she said. "It's not something you can just jump into randomly, because running three miles at your top pace is not an easy feat unless you absolutely love to run and do it every day."
