Fugitive in custody
A fugitive from Craig’s Correctional Alternative Placement Services is back in the Moffat County Jail on a $50,000 bail after a scuffle with officers from the Craig Police Department on Friday afternoon.
Shane Stockton, 21, was booked on two additional felony charges of escape.
The first charge is for when he was reported missing from CAPS at about 11 p.m. Thursday, and a second escape charge is for fleeing from police on foot after he was found Friday afternoon.
Stockton was sentenced to CAPS on Jan. 4 for about 1 1/2 years.
Police responded to a call that Stockton was in a duplex, 19 W. Seventh St.
Stockton reportedly was hiding in the attic, and police had to negotiate with him to come out. Police several times threatened to use gas to get Stockton to come out of the attic, but Stockton eventually came out without the use of force, Police Chief Walt Vanatta said.
Stockton was taken to The Memorial Hospital for cuts to his body.
Vanatta said it was unclear whether Stockton’s cuts were self-inflicted or whether he incurred them while crawling around in the attic.
After being treated, Stockton ran away from police while his hands were cuffed behind his back as he was being released from the hospital, Vanatta said. Police apprehended Stockton about a block away and took him into custody.
Stockton received a CAPS sentence after pleading guilty to two felony charges of second-degree aggravated motor vehicle theft and criminal trespassing.
The plea also included a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
He was sentenced to two years at CAPS but was excused for the 191 days he spent previously in the Moffat County Jail.
