Former Craig resident arrested on child sexual assault charges
A former Craig resident was arrested on sexual assault charges Monday afternoon when he showed up for a court appearance.
The former resident was arrested on a charge of sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust, a class 3 felony, for allegedly molesting one of his children.
He is in the Moffat County Public Safety Center jail on a $50,000 bond.
The suspect’s children, all minors, have been in the custody of Social Services since January 2001, but the police did not receive a report the alleged sexual assault until the last week of February, Craig Police Detective Storm Fallon said.
“It’s real difficult for (the children) because of their upbringing,” Fallon said. “I don’t know how to explain it, just that it’s very difficult for them.
“They want to remain loyal to their father but they know what was done to them was wrong.”
The case is still under investigation and further charges could be filed, Craig Police Administrative Sgt. Bill Leonard said.
According to court documents, the suspect was due in court Monday for motion hearings concerning two cases the first case concerning four counts of tampering with a witness and the second dealing with two counts of violation of conditions of bail bond and three counts of violation of
conditions of a restraining order.
The cases stemmed from another pending case that alleges the suspect physically abused his children.
The suspect also is facing charges of domestic violence and harassment stemming from an incident on Jan. 19 in Silverthorne, where he now resides.
He is due in court in Breckenridge on April 5 for that case.
The suspect will appear for an advisement hearing in court in Moffat County today.
It is the policy of the Craig Daily Press not to identify suspects in cases of sexual assault until the defendant is found guilty of the charges.
