First Baptist Church celebrates 90th anniversary

Can you believe it? Spring is here and it is time to celebrate!

In 1911, a small group of believers came together to form a Baptist church in the tiny frontier town of Craig. In the early years, they met wherever they could find a place from the courthouse to a grove of trees.

In the early 20s, a Chapel train car came to town, and the membership grew so that they felt the need for a more permanent place. A building was constructed at 700 School St., and served the congregation for 50 years.

God was faithful through those years, and though pastors came and went and the faces changed from year to year, the mission of the church to fulfill the great commission and share Jesus continued.

There was not always smooth sailing but God brought the people through times of lean finances, low membership and spiritual battles. Whenever it seemed like the struggle was too great, and that the church could not go on, God intervened and kept His promise never to leave or forsake us.

In 1975, five acres of land were purchased, and a new brick building was constructed at 1150 W. 9th St. in Craig. For the last 26 years it has met the need as a gathering place for the first Baptist Church.

In the 90 years we have been together as a congregation, just as styles in clothing or cars change, there have been changes at FBC.

The songs they sang in the first century church are not the songs they sang in the 17th century, and the songs that were sung then are not the songs we sing today, but the words still express God’s mercy and love toward us.

God’s Word has not changed, and the words we read in our Bible today still convey the message that God gave so long ago that He had a plan from the beginning, to send His Son to be our Savior.

Come and celebrate God’s faithfulness with us on May 19-20

There will be a potluck dinner at 6 p.m. May 19 at Shadow Mountain Village Clubhouse. Meat and beverages will be provided. Please bring covered dishes to finish the meal.

At 10:30 a.m. May 20 there will be a 90th anniversary celebration worship service and a fund-raising dinner at noon sponsored by the youth group to raise money for the mission trip to Belize.

Everyone is invited.

Please pass this invitation along to those who might not normally hear, or give addresses to the church office and they will mail an invitation out. (Submitted by the First Baptist Church.)
