Faith Column: Gaining faith

Kyle Wren
Faith Column

In today’s world, with the chaos and commotion all around us, faith has become something important in all of our lives.

Faith in a supreme power, someone superior to us as humans, and having trust in what you believe in will come to pass. Faith is believing in something not seen. Faith by definition in the King James version of the Bible is “To have confidence in something or someone” (Bible Dictionary, “Faith,” 669).

True faith is centered in Jesus Christ. “Faith is a principle of action and power” (Bible Dictionary, 670). It’s not just about wishing for things to happen or passively hoping for the best. There has to be an active commitment, a willingness to put in the effort to grow our faith and trust that what we believe in will be realized.

How do we gain faith in Jesus Christ? We have to find, read and study about him. Through consistent prayer, scripture study and reflection on His teachings, we come closer to Him. As we do this, through our efforts, we will slowly draw nearer to Him, feeling His presence more deeply in our hearts and lives. A good feeling of peace, calm and assurance is called the Comforter. “But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you (John 14:26).”

It reminds me of when I was a kid. A few of my friends would stand directly behind me. Then, they would tell me to fall backward. I couldn’t see them with their arms and hands out, I had to have faith that my friends were there to catch me as I fell backward. My initial impulse was not to fall backward. I’m scared of falling anyways, but after some encouragement, I let loose and fell. They caught me like they said they would. It was a simple but profound experience that taught me a lot about trust.

Faith is very similar to my example. I couldn’t see them, but knew they would be there to support me, just like how we trust that Christ is there, even when we don’t see Him. We may not always feel His presence physically, but His love and strength surround us in unseen ways, guiding and uplifting us through life’s trials.

In conclusion, we are all going to be faced with difficult situations in life. Faith centered in Jesus Christ will help us navigate the ups and downs. It will help us through difficult times and bring us joy, peace and hope. Even when we feel alone or uncertain, faith in Him will give us hope and light that we otherwise would not have.

Having our foundation built on faith in Christ will cement us so we won’t get tossed around with all the commotion surrounding us each day. It will also give us the resilience to move forward and strive to be more like Him. This foundation of faith is something that sustains us, especially when things seem uncertain. It helps us stand firm amid storms and provides the strength to keep moving forward, one step at a time, trusting that He will be there, always ready to catch us when we fall.
