Faith Column: Fear not

Dana Prescott< br>Faith Column

Commotion. We live in a world full of commotion.

2025 has blown in blustery and brutal. Fires, war, division and, I don’t know about you, but everyone I know started this year off with a terrible sickness that lasted for weeks. It makes for an unsteady start to a new year. However, the message I want to share with you today is the first message given by Heavenly messengers anytime they appear and speak to man.

Fear not.

In the account of the birth of Jesus, there are four different occasions when an angel appeared and the first words they said were, “Fear not.” The first account was with Zacharias, then Mary, mother of the Son of God, then Joseph and finally the shepherds. For each one, the first message before all others was, fear not.

Life presents us reasons to fear daily. It’s scary out there. However, I cannot help but notice that anytime representatives of the Lord speak to man, or Jesus himself speaks, the message He wants us to focus on, the message He wants us to lean into, is not to fear; to trust in Him. Because, after all, he does know the beginning from the ending and in 2 Timothy 1:7, we read, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.”

So, how do we navigate this chaotic world without fear?

One of the most respected religious leaders of our day, Russell M. Nelson, has expounded on this idea recently.

He says, “Our Father knows that when we are surrounded by uncertainty and fear, what will help us the very most is to hear His son. Because when we seek to truly hear His son, we will know what to do in any circumstance. In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting and constant influence of the Holy Ghost.”

We must strengthen our relationship with Jesus and our ability to Hear Him through the Holy Ghost. This takes practice, lots and lots of practice. But it is vital in these uncertain times to be able to hear Him and be directed by Him who knows all and loves all.

I believe that if He were to come to you in your place of fear or uncertainty, the first thing He would tell you would be, fear not. If you have a close, personal relationship with Him, the circumstances of your life will not matter nearly as much as the focus of your life, (Russell M. Nelson).

Listen to His exact words, “fear not (Matt 10:31), “do not be afraid” (Luke 12:32), “do not let your heart be troubled” (John 14:27). I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).

As we learn to hear Him, we will have no need to fear, for He always brings peace on earth and goodwill toward men.
