Faith Column: Because God is loyal and faithful

Rod Compton
Faith Column

Prov. 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.

I must admit something today. Sometimes I have trust issues. It is not easy to trust people when they have let you down; when they said they would and then they didn’t.

Trust is a delicate thing because it can be broken so easily. What can be crushed so quickly can take years to build back up. How about you? Do you find yourself mistrusting others? Do you wonder if there is anyone that you can fully rely upon?

In Proverbs, we find one of my favorite couplets of scriptures. I remember memorizing this when I was 8 years old. We were in Vacation Bible School and our leader challenged us to memorize these verses by the end of the week.

Oh yeah, there was some motivation as well. If we did memorize it, we would get one of those large Hershey bars. You know, the ones that are super big.

That was more than enough motivation for me — P.S. I was already hyper and all that sugar would give me superpowers… hehehe.

So, it was a no-brainer. I had it down that evening and I couldn’t wait to quote my scripture the next day. The problem was that it was Monday, and we wouldn’t get the prize until Friday.

This is also an old trick used in Children’s Ministry; give them sugar and then send them home.

But here I am, years later, and this passage still resonates in my heart.

Why? Because I have always tried to practice this in my life. I have found the One, and only One, that I can always trust. He is my Rock and My Safe Haven. He is wisdom and knowledge.

There are times when I don’t understand or don’t know what to do; and so I just follow His word and trust Him with all of my heart and not listen to my own rationalizations. I know that He always knows best.

And here is the caveat — when we take Him at His word and follow His directions, He will lead us down the correct path. It doesn’t get any better than that.

Dear Lord, help us to realize that doing what You have said in Your Word is always the best course. Help us be trusting followers. Help us to rely on You above all else. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
