Craig man, daughter-in-law killed in crash on U.S. Highway 40

A crash on U.S. Highway 40 near mile marker 81 west of Craig resulted in two fatalities at 3:11 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, according to Colorado State Patrol. 

Ervin Gerber, 85, of Craig, and his daughter-in-law Ashley James, 57, of Minnesota, were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Moffat County coroner.

The crash involved a Subaru containing three passengers, including Gerber and James, and a semi-truck. According to state patrol, the Subaru was traveling westbound near mile marker 81 and the semi-truck was traveling eastbound.



The Subaru made a left turn onto a private driveway when the semi-truck hit the vehicle on the passenger side. Both vehicles then ran off the right side of the road into a field.

The driver of the Subaru, an 81-year-old woman, sustained life-threatening injuries, according to State Patrol. The semi-truck driver was not injured.
