A Craig woman was transported to the hospital Tuesday after her car slid off U.S. Highway 40 about 10 miles east of Craig.

The woman was held suspended upside down by her seatbelt until emergency workers extricated her from the vehicle.

Beverly Chenoweth, 46, of Craig reportedly sustained back, neck and muscular injuries, but she was not listed in serious or critical condition soon after the accident, Colorado State Patrol Trooper Ryan Parker said. She was transported by ambulance to The Memorial Hospital.

Chenoweth was heading east toward Hayden at about 7:45 a.m. when the 1991 Buick Sedan she was driving skidded and rotated off the right side of the road, rolled down an embankment and came to a rest on its top against a tree.

Chenoweth was suspended by her seatbelt in the driver’s seat when rescue workers arrived, Parker said.

Attempts to reach Chenoweth were not successful.

Parker said the highway had visible patches of snow Tuesday. An airbag was deployed and alcohol is not considered a factor in the accident, Parker said.

The accident slowed commuter traffic Tuesday, leaving only one lane open for traffic heading east and west.

Rescue teams and police from Hayden and Craig responded to the accident.
