Like the Olympic Games, the application process to host the annual meeting for Colorado-Wyoming Association of Museums is done well in advance. It was two years ago that Nicky Boulger first offered up the name of her place of employment as a potential site, and all that waiting has paid off at last.

Craig will host the 2015 annual meeting for CWAM Wednesday through Sunday, a convention for museum professionals across Colorado and Wyoming to learn more about gathering local and regional history, creating exhibits and utilizing communities to enhance the remembrance of the past.

People from establishments throughout the two states will be in town for activities sponsored by Wyman Living History Museum, Museum of Northwest Colorado, Moffat County Tourism Association, Craig Chamber of Commerce and other entities.

“We’re probably one of the smaller communities they’ve had it with, and I thought it was really cool they chose us,” Boulger said.

Boulger has attended the annual meeting previously and found it a good collaborative effort to get ideas on the best way to run a museum from people who know the business.

Folks who aren’t affiliated with museums are able to attend but must register at cwam-us.org.

Local speakers will include Lou Wyman, owner of the Wyman Museum, and Janell Oberlander, vice president of Colorado Northwestern Community College’s Craig campus.

Events include opening night Wednesday at the Clarion Inn and Suites, with workshops at the hotel as the week progresses, as well as in locations like the Center of Craig, the Wyman Museum, Museum of Northwest Colorado, Moffat County Fairgrounds, Yampa Valley Fiberworks and more, giving participants a well-rounded look at Moffat County.

Part of the benefit of being a host city is to showcase Craig’s capabilities as a tourist destination and sending people home with a good impression of what to recommend to friends.

“They can say, ‘hey, check out this, check out that,’” Boulger said. “I’m hoping it will benefit us in the future.”
