The Craig Rotary Club honored Derek Maiolo as its Student of the Month at its Oct. 25 meeting.
Maiolo is a sophomore at Moffat County High School and is the first recipient of the award.
Maiolo is the treasurer of MCHS Student Council, the head of the Humanitarian Committee for Student Council and the driver behind “Day Without Hate.”
He is instrumental in the Megan Meier Project (cyberbullying prevention) and is a member of the MCHS speech and debate team, MCHS band and the MCHS boys varsity cross-country team.
“He also takes advanced classes and has a 4.0,” high school counselor Paula Duzik said in an email. “Besides all of this, he is genuine, humble and personable.”
The Rotary Club intends to honor a Moffat County High School freshman or sophomore, as selected by the school’s counselors, each month.
Each year, the club provides two scholarships for the Rotary Youth Leadership Award to send young leaders to camp program.
