Renata Beason, a Craig resident, has been chosen as a semifinalist in the American Quilting Society’s QuiltWeek competition with her quilt, Midnight Stroll.
The quilt has previously won first place in the 2020 Hoffman Challenge in 2021 and spent two years travelling as part of various shows across the country.
But ranking highly in another international competition was still a surprise. Beason said getting the news felt “like butterflies in my stomach.”
The quilt was designed with help from her husband, and Beason described the work as “intense” as the sewing was all done completely by hand.
QuiltWeek, with entries from 32 states and 11 countries, will take place in Grand Rapids, Mich. from Sept. 13-16 and will feature 332 semifinalist quilts. The quilts, including Midnight Stroll, will be up for a variety of awards, each with their own prizes. Best in Show wins $10,000 and other awards include Best Wall Quilt, Best Traditional Design, Best Original Design, Best Hand, Best Stationary and Best Moveable Workmanship. The 2023 Grand Rapids convention is expected to draw 17,000 visitors across four days.
AQS hosts a variety of prestigious and widely-entered quilting conventions across the country, including in Florida and Missouri.
