Craig Press names John Chalstrom as new editor

The Craig Press announces the promotion of Assistant Editor John Chalstrom to editor, replacing Eli Pace, who accepted a position as the editor of the Maui News in November.

In addition to being the editor of the Craig Press, Chalstrom will serve as the Special Publication Editor for the Steamboat Pilot and Craig Press overseeing the development and publication of special sections that include Colorado Hunter, Yampa Valley Adventures, Moffat County Locals and many others.

Publisher Bonnie Stewart said, “I am excited that John is taking on the role of editor for the Craig Press. Our focus in 2025 is to increase our local coverage in Craig and John will spearhead that effort. We are very fortunate to have John’s leadership in Craig.”

A native of the state of Iowa, Chalstrom retired after a 33-year career in education, where he served several Iowa school districts as a chief financial officer, superintendent, high school principal and teacher. In addition to his work in education, Chalstrom was appointed to serve two terms as a board member for the Iowa Department of Corrections overseeing the state’s penal system.

Chalstrom earned a doctoral degree in education from Iowa State University in 2007. He graduated from Drake University in 1995 with a master’s degree in education administration and earned his bachelor’s degree in social science from the University of Northern Iowa in 1988.

Chalstrom has written extensively on outdoor issues having been published in Sporting Classics, Colorado Outdoors Magazine, Colorado Hunter, Iowa Outdoors, the Des Moines Register, Iowa Sportsman, American Cattlemen and American Dairymen.

He is an avid outdoorsman and also works as a part-time guide for Steamboat Flyfisher. Chalstrom resides in the Stagecoach area with his wife Jill, who is a school psychologist with NW BOCES.
