CNCC Corner: New year brings new opportunities

It is with great enthusiasm that I wish each of you a Happy New Year as we ring in 2025.
Staff returned to campus from holiday on January 2, 2025. Faculty and residential students arrive on Thursday Jan. 16. Employee Spring convocation occurs on Jan. 16 in Craig and Jan. 17 in Rangely. Spring classes commence on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
We look forward to jumping in, both feet first on campus-based projects including sidewalk, windows, and siding replacements in Rangely and the small-scale housing project, which is at the funding search phase.
This project will be located at the Craig campus. As these projects begin taking shape in terms of planning, completion, and construction, our communities will be informed.
Our men and women’s basketball schedules are underway. Both teams begin conference play in January with the next home game against Salt Lake Community College on Jan. 16. The robust home and away schedule can be found at athletics.cncc.edu.
The women are rebuilding after a year off from conference play and the men are on a historic run. With fourteen wins in preseason play, this also makes this year’s men’s basketball team one of the winningest CNCC men’s basketball teams in known college history.
CNCC wishes to formally welcome Coaches who will provide leadership for two new athletic programs, both planned to begin competition in Fall of 2025.
Mr. William Toombs is the college’s head cross country coach. He joined CNCC in early fall 2024 for the purpose of fielding a team in the coming fall.
Before joining CNCC, Coach Toombs built an impressive academic career, serving as a faculty member in history, political science, and public administration at several institutions, including Muskingum University, Southern Oregon University, University of Texas Permian Basin, Pittsburg State University, Idaho State University and Odessa College. His background in higher education reflects his dedication to fostering academic success among his athletes.
A former college athlete himself, Coach Toombs competed in cross-country and track and field at Treasure Valley Community College in Oregon and has continued his involvement in running through various running clubs. His coaching philosophy emphasizes academics, community service, teamwork and building a winning culture.
In late fall, CNCC welcomed new Men’s wrestling coach, Tytus Coombs. Coach Coombs is in full recruitment mode in order to secure a team to begin competition in fall 2025.
He is a Rangely native and a proud graduate of Colorado State University, Pueblo where he competed for the Thunderwolves in wrestling. He graduated with a degree in exercise science, specializing in strength and conditioning and holds a CSCS (Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist) certification accredited by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
Most recently, Coombs designed and implemented postseason and offseason strength and conditioning programs for the CSU Pueblo wrestling team, further honing his skills as a coach and mentor.
We look forward to seeing you at one of our home basketball games this month, but more importantly wish you a happy, healthy start to the New Year.
