CAPS escapee charged with misdemeanor
A work release inmate who failed to report back to the Moffat County Jail last month and was later arrested by police will be charged with a misdemeanor for escaping.
Steven Mark Tamlin, 39, of Craig, was supposed to be back at the Moffat County Jail on Feb. 25, but he didn’t show up.
Craig Police arrested Tamlin Feb. 26 after a short foot chase. He is currently being held at the Moffat County Jail.
Jail administrator Lt. Dean Herndon said Tamlin is charged with a misdemeanor for escaping.
If Tamlin had been in jail on a felony charge, he would have been charged with a felony for escaping, Herndon said.
Tamlin also is charged with violating a protection order.
Deputy District Attorney Michael Stern said the second charge stems from authorities’ belief that Tamlin consumed alcohol while he was out of jail.
If convicted of the escape charge, Tamlin faces an additional 18 months in the county jail.
If convicted of the protection order violation, also a misdemeanor, Tamlin faces an additional six months in jail.
A judge sentenced Tamlin, who has an extensive criminal record, to one year of work release in November on charges of violating a restraining order.
Tamlin’s work release job was at the Craig Station Power Plant.
