Authorities have released the name of a Hayden man killed in a head on collision on U.S. Highway 40, one mile west of Milner early Thursday evening.

Lucas Toral Pantaleon, 39, of Hayden, was pronounced dead on the scene of the accident according to Routt County coroner Mitch Locke.

According to Patrick Rice of the Colorado State Patrol, Pantaleon was driving eastbound on U.S. Highway 40 near milepost 120 when he lost control of his Honda and traveled into the westbound lanes, colliding with an oncoming Ford pickup truck. Both vehicles remained on their wheels and came to rest on the roadway.

The two occupants of the Ford, from Craig, were transported to a local area hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Investigators reported severe weather conditions at the scene of the crash and are considering those factors while investigating the cause of the crash. State patrol said the section of U.S. 40 where the incident occurred was “covered with a layer of hail” at the time of the wreck.

The accident resulted in the closing of the highway until 6:50 p.m. with traffic being detoured onto Routt County County Road 33A to C.R. 33 to C.R. 27, also known as Twentymile Road.

A Colorado State Patrol spokesperson said two vehicles were involved in the wreck on U.S. Highway 40 approximately one mile west of Hayden on Thursday, April 25, 2024.
