Obituary: Melvin Donald “Mouse” Sullivan

On August 24, 2023, Melvin Sullivan caught a fast horse and raced to catch the herd. Melvin Donald Sullivan returned to the presence of his Heavenly Father, surrounded by his loving family, at The Memorial Hospital in Craig, Colorado, on August 24, 2023. Melvin Sullivan “Sully” or “Mouse” was born at the Sullivan Ranch at Pagoda, Colorado on November 9, 1930, to Brendan and Mary (Marshall) Sullivan. He was one of thirteen children and twin to his brother Milton. During his early years he attended school at the ranch and Pagoda before Hayden, then graduating from high school in Meeker, Colorado. Although small in size he made up in veracity, excelling in athletics. He served as a corpsman on the USS Nerius during the Korean War. After discharge he returned to Moffat County to work in the family sheep operation. He married Flora Jean Trevenen in Maybell, Colorado on January 31, 1958. He attended college, graduating from University of Wyoming with degree in Pharmacy Science, later continuing his education receiving his Doctorate’s of Pharmacy through Idaho State University. He worked as a pharmacist in Montrose and Delta, Colorado and later Meeker, Colorado. He was happiest when sharing his kindness with others. He enjoyed his relationships in his community built through his job, his church and civic activities. He was a member of the Rotary Club, Colorado State Board of Retail Pharmacy, Delta County Republican Central Committee, and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a recipient of the “Silver Beaver Award” from the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed spending time out of doors with his family, riding a horse and working with livestock. His passion was hunting. Together, he and Flora four children and was proud of their accomplishments. He was welcomed back into the herd by his parents——
He is preceded in death by his parents; Brendan and Mary, brothers Brendan, (Bud) Tom, Patrick, Roger, Francis (Franny) Byon Jon (Doc), Milton (Dude), Jim, Pat and sisters Mary, CeCelia, and Jeanette. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Flora Jean of Craig; Melton (Elaine) of Craig; Maureen Wilkey (Chris) of Craig; Murray (Christine) of Eagle, Idaho; Mary Mathews (Byron) of Cheyenne, Wyoming, 8 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren. Upon his request there will be no formal funeral service. A Celebration of His Life will be held at the Eleven Bar Ranch during Memorial Day Weekend 2024.
