Audrey Ann (Roberts) Kling, daughter of John C. and Audrey E. (Mahon) Roberts, was born in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on January 31, 1935, and passed away with family at her side on September 25, 2024, in Craig, Colorado.
Audrey spent her youth in the small town of Augusta, Wisconsin surrounded by people who loved her including her parents, sister Alice, brother Tom, as well as her Aunt Guida Lawson and family across the street. Audrey spent her summers fishing with her Dad, swimming in nearby lakes, and when winter arrived – she would break out the ice skates. She loved music and played cornet in her high school and college marching bands. As a young girl, Audrey would often play Taps at war veteran’s funerals.
Audrey graduated from Augusta High School in 1953 and attended Wisconsin State College-La Crosse for two years. While at La Crosse, she marched with her band at the Cigar Bowl in Tampa, Florida on New Year’s Day 1954.
She married her high school sweetheart, Howard H. Kling, in 1955. Howard and Audrey soon welcomed a daughter, Ann Elizabeth and a son, Michael Howard. They lived in Madison, Wisconsin while Howard completed his degree. Job opportunities took them to Milwaukee, and then Freeport, Illinois, and in 1967 the family moved to Arvada, Colorado. They enjoyed hiking and fishing in the Rockies. Audrey loved working as a Librarian and Reading Specialist at Lawrence Elementary where she helped kids build reading skills.
In 1976, they returned to small town life in beautiful Craig. Audrey found work as a secretary at Pleasant, Peck & Lawrence, and soon found friendships that continue to this day. She was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church and PEO Chapter AJ. They called Moffat County home for the rest of their years. When the grandkids arrived, their lives were filled with first steps, ball games, 4-H horse and livestock events, and school plays. They were delighted to be a part of the kids’ lives and were truly the most proud, supportive, wonderful grandparents.
Audrey is survived by her daughter Ann (Nick) Charchalis of Craig, son Michael (Ruth) Kling, of Boise, Idaho, grandchildren Audrey Anna (Luke) Masterson and Michael (Megan) Charchalis of Craig, David (Margaret) Kling, of Salem, Oregon, and Angela (Gabe) Ramseier, of Arvada, Colorado, great granddaughters, Madelyn and Elizabeth Charchalis, Amalea and Alaina Masterson of Craig, great grandsons Mack and Morris Ramseier of Arvada, and Cassidy Kling of Salem, Oregon.
Services will be held Saturday, October 12 at 3:00 PM at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. A reception and meal will be held in the church hall following interment.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Craig or the PEO Scholarship fund in care of Grant Mortuary, 621 Yampa Avenue, Craig, CO 81625.
