Many subjects are part of Amber Snow’s curriculum, but there’s one she can only teach by example: joy.

Snow earned a special kind of apple on her desk as recipient of Best Elementary School Teacher in the 2018 Best of Moffat County Awards for her work as an instructor in first- and second-grade through Moffat County Christian Academy.

Also a mother of four and a coach with the cheer program Moffat County Elite, Snow said her schedule can get busy, though it’s always rewarding.

“There’s a lot to balance, but I just love being around these kids,” she said. “They’re so fun, and their hearts are so pure, and I just knew this is where God wanted me to be.”

Snow has spent four years with the private school, which relocated from Calvary Baptist Church across town to Clay Avenue under its new name at the beginning of this year. Before that, she had worked at East Elementary and Craig Intermediate School before its shift to Sandrock Elementary.

Originally, she worked specifically as a sign language interpreter.

“I still love to incorporate that into the classroom, and the kids love doing sign,” she said.

She added that other teachers, such as Julie Sperl and Vera Turner, helped give her a love for education.

“They taught me so much and gave me so many things I can put in my toolbox,” she said.

Snow said Linda Knoche’s work as an early proponent of the local faith-based school was also an inspiration for her.

“She’s like my spiritual mother,” she said.

The spiritual side is also a facet she likes to embrace with the Abeka lesson plan.

Among the projects for her pupils in the past year was learning about habitats for ladybugs and the growth cycle of praying mantises.

“I try to keep it fun, because when kids are in love with learning, they excel so much,” she said.

Fellow MCCA teacher Amanda Hayes said she has enjoyed not only working with Snow, but also seeing how her work as a teacher impacts her own kids, so much so she nominated her for the award.

“Amber has taught my girls for the past three years, and they’ve had such tremendous growth under her in their academics and their love of God,” she said. “She has just been amazing, and we are blessed to have her here.”
