YVEA repairs temporary power outage

About 7,000 were without electricity Friday night in and around Craig

A Friday night outage left about 7,000 homes in and around Craig without power for about an hour and a half, a Yampa Valley Electric Association official said.

The outage, which occurred around 5:50 p.m., was caused by a two-pole transmission structure falling into the Yampa River a mile-and-a-half outside of Craig, south on Colorado Highway 13.

The pole was on the river’s bank, and heavy water runoff “ate the bank,” causing the structure to fall into the river, said Jeff Hergenreter, YVEA line superintendent.

A four-member crew worked to restore power, which occurred about 7:25 p.m.

Hergenreter said he was pleased with the YVEA crew’s response to the outage.

“We’ve got a great crew and the guys did an awesome job,” he said.

Power was out throughout the city, Hergenreter said, as well as far north almost to Wyoming, west to Lay and south to the power plant.

Crews continued working into Friday night to retrieve the downed poles from the river. They will be replaced sometime in the future, the line superintendent said.
