YVEA elects 3 new board members

The Yampa Valley Electric Association Board added three new members during its annual meeting Saturday at Hayden High School auditorium.

Craig residents Larry Ellgen and Mike Brinks and Steamboat Springs resident Tom Fox are the newest members of the nine-person board.

Larry Covillo, YVEA president and general manager, said about 19,000 ballots were sent to the company's customers and members.

"We usually get back about 2,400 to 2,700, so this year was about average," he said.

YVEA, formed in 1940, provides power purchased from Western Area Power Administration and Xcel Energy to more than 26,000 customers across Northwest Colorado.

Areas where the company provides service include Craig, Steamboat Springs, Hayden, Yampa, as well as Wyoming towns Baggs and Savery.

Covillo added that turnout at the annual meeting was higher than usual, with more than 70 people coming out to hear officer and director reports in addition to the election results.

The new directors took office following the meeting.

Fox, running for District 6, which includes north Routt County and the City of Steamboat Springs, won against incumbent candidate Bill Haight, 1,260 to 1,188.

Ellgen won 1,265 to 1,103 against Marilynn Hill in the race for north Moffat County and the City of Craig's District 2. He will replace Ray DuBois in the position.

"I'd applied for the job before when Pud Stetson died, but this was the first time I went through the election process," he said. "I'm excited to be on the board because I want to do my part in keeping the area fiscally sound."

Ellgen said his main focus in his new position will be maintaining a cost-effective use of electricity.

"Generally, we take electricity for granted, but I want to help keep it affordable and reliable," he said.

Brinks listed the same goal for what he wants to accomplish as a board member. He ran unopposed for District 3, the City of Craig, taking the place of outgoing member James Simos.

"We've got a good company, and I want to help keep it going that way," he said. "There's a lot of experienced people on the board, and I'll be learning from them. Maybe I can come up with a new idea or two."

Covillo said he was pleased with the outcome of the election and the latest additions to the board.

"Larry and Mike both applied before, so I'm glad to see that they still have an interest in it, and Tom is very well-respected in the Steamboat community," he said. "I think they'll all make great directors once they get acclimated to how we do things."
