With hundreds of children to keep track of at an all-day event, hosting youth wrestling can be a logistical nightmare. But it was no problem for Moffat County Youth Wrestling.

MCYW team hosted the Levi Webber Memorial Tournament on Saturday at Moffat County High School. It was the team’s first home tournament and went well from start to finish.

More than 350 wrestlers ages 4 to 14 from nine teams, as well as some independent competitors, packed the bleachers in the high school gym for most of the day, as young wrestlers competed to take home a medal.

Eight mats ran matches throughout the day as wrestlers and their families from across the Western Slope, as well as North Park and Baggs, Wyo., were in attendance.

But Craig made sure to be especially well-represented at the tournament. More than 70 wrestlers from MCYW wrestled Saturday, along with about 20 from the Bad Dogs Youth Wrestling team.

It was a good day for Moffat County wrestlers, as well, with plenty finishing in the top five (in the medals) within the 90 age and weight brackets available.

In its second season of operation, the MCYW team has ballooned to 88 members, coach Mark Zimmerman said. And in hosting the team’s first tournament, the organization has taken another step forward.

Moffat County Youth Wrestling gives youths interested in the sport an alternative to the Bad Dogs team, which has a longer season. MCYW’s season lasts about three months during the spring.
