Ball drop fundraiser offers valuable prizes

Craig Daily Press Staff Report

A selection of golf balls scattered across Yampa Valley Golf Course await pick-up. The Yahoo Golf Tournament & Ball Drop will take place this Saturday at YVGC. The event will benefit Boys & Girls Club of Craig and Craig Kiwanis Club.

It's not unusual to see droplets of water falling from the sky. A couple thousand dimpled pieces of plastic is another story, but the instant these items hit the ground, it means a lot to a number of people.

The ball drop takes place at 8:30 a.m., and entrants can purchase white or red balls — $10 for a white ball, $50 for one red and five whites or $100 for a dozen whites and three reds — that can win them one of the prizes worth more than $7,500 donated by local businesses. Prizes include Denver Broncos tickets, golf equipment and packages, gift certificates and more.

Organizers will place hundreds of balls purchased by entrants in a small plane, which will fly over the course, releasing them over the 18th fairway, where those closest to the hole will result in winning prizes.

Dana Duran, executive director for Boys & Girls Club, said the drop is a sight to behold.

"It's really neat to see, and with all the rain we've had, a lot of the balls might just go splat this year, but it's usually like watching a bunch of pingpong balls bouncing around," she said.

Duran said this year's proceeds will be especially important for the recipient organizations, with Boys & Girls Club and Kiwanis combining their efforts for new "youth leadership programs."

"We're in the planning stages for helping our young people really gain some leadership skills and knowledge with some of those funds," she said.

The number of sponsors and participants involved in the Yahoo is an example of Craig putting a lot of effort into its youths, she added.

"It's a critical component to our overall funding, and it's just a great tournament," Duran said.
