Woman charged with assault

Craig Police arrested a woman Tuesday morning after responding to reports that she threatened her roommates with a handgun.

Janis Marie Coupens, 53, was booked into Moffat County Jail on three charges after police responded to a call at a home in the 900 block of West First Street.

According to police reports, dispatchers received a 911 hang-up call from the home at 7:43 a.m. Tuesday.

When dispatchers called back, someone answered and said Coupens was causing trouble, saying he or she had been assaulted, Craig Police Chief Walt Van–atta said.

According to reports, Coup–ens, who lived at the home, was drunk and waving a handgun around, Vanatta said.

When officers arrived at the home, they reported finding a gun in a plastic bag in the yard, Vanatta said.

Coupens was arrested and charged with felony menacing assault with a gun and misdemeanor reckless endangerment. Vanatta said those two charges stem from the accusations of waving the gun around and threatening her roommates.

Coupens also was charged with prohibited use of a weapon for suspicion of being drunk and carrying a gun, Vanatta said.

Coupens remained in Moffat County Jail Wednesday on $1,000 bond.
