Wildcats edge Bulldogs
The Moffat County High School varsity volleyball team let a win slip away against the Fruita Monument Wildcats Tuesday in Craig.
The Wildcats downed the Bulldogs (3-5), 16-14, in game one and then MCHS came back and won game two, 15-8. The Wildcats edged MCHS, 15-8, in game three.
Bulldogs coach Vicki Haddan said her team had a hard time serving and that was the difference in the match.
“I was pleased with the way they came back in game two,” said Haddan. “We missed a lot of serves tonight and that is what really hurt us. We decided to get tentative in the third game and that cost us the game.”
MCHS lost its second straight three-game match and Haddan wants that to change.
“We have had a lot of three-game matches this year,” said Haddan. “We have had a hard time coming up on top. It’s our turn to turn the corner and start coming up on top in those three-game matches.”
According to Haddan, Wildcats middle blocker Val Monger, a senior, did some damage against the Bulldogs.
“Fruita has a lot of big girls on the team,” said Haddan. “One of there players hurt us in the middle. She blocked a lot of balls and hit them as well.”
In game three, MCHS jumped ahead of Fruita Monument, 4-1. The Wildcats then got on a roll and scored four straight points to pull ahead 5-4.
The Bulldogs tied the game at 5-5 and then the Wildcats put the game out of reach by scoring five times to build a 10-5 advantage.
MCHS did close the score to 11-8, but Fruita Monument never let up, winning the final game by seven points.
For the Bulldogs Liz Knights, a senior, finished the night with 11 kills. Senior Megan Gregg had eight kills and senior Cammie Hillewaert had seven.
In the junior varsity game, the Wildcats edged the Bulldogs, 14-16, 15-12 and 15-10.
The Bulldogs varsity team returns to the court at 6:30 p.m. Friday against Glenwood Springs at home. The freshmen team will start the day at 4:30 p.m. followed by the sophomores at 5:30 p.m.
