White River Club’s annual fish fry June 11

White fish caught in the White River breaded and deep-fat fried to perfection.

That’s what’s on the menu Saturday, June 11, as the White River Community Club stages its annual fund-raiser.

WRCA’s annual fund-raising fish fry is one of those regional social events of the summer that few miss.

Homemade side dishes and desserts, plus the opportunity for fellowship, are hallmarks of the fish fry, which begins at 4 p.m. at the White River Community Association’s clubhouse.

Dinner will be served until 6 p.m. A $10 donation for adults is requested. Children between 6 and 11 eat for $5. Those younger than 5 eat for free.

Proceeds from the fish fry go toward maintenance, necessary repairs and preservation of the building.

The century-old clubhouse served as the Buford School until its closure in 1952. In 1953, it became the meeting hall for the White River community.

Last year, club members began looking into renovation of the historical landmark, which would include a new roof and foundation. The club is in the process of seeking grants from the Colorado Historical Society and others to help fund the project.

Club historian Dee Wiess said, “It’s a little bit of history worth protecting and preserving.”

She said any donation would be used for that purpose.

“Most grants require in-kind monies or matching funds, so we are looking at ways to get our share,” she said.

She said the lion’s share of maintenance and repairs are donated by members.

“It’s not just the building we want to preserve, it is the closeness of the community,” she said. “There’s a great bit of history here.”
