Sunset Elementary School broke ground during a ceremony in June 1954 with School Board President Ray Freeman turning the first shovel of dirt as large earth-moving equipment waited to begin leveling the land. Craig voters passed a $290,000 bond issue for the new school that November. The building was constructed by Precon Inc. of Denver and included offices, an all-purpose room and 12 classrooms to handle 400 students. Eugene D. Sternberg of Denver was the architect. Pictured at the ceremonies are, from left, Superintendent of Schools John A. Gilchrist, School Board Secretary Cecil Murphy, Freeman and Mrs. Gladys Davis, school board treasurer.
