Wellness Tip: Nutrients — Macro, micro and phyto
April 17, 2015
A balanced diet includes the proper ratio of macronutrients and micronutrients.
Macronutrients include proteins, carbohydrates and fats. Micronutrients include vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. A ratio of 40 percent carbohydrate, 30 percent protein and 30 percent fat is optimal for healthy, active individuals.
Micronutrients are vital for proper cell function, which is essential for overall health and wellness. Micronutrients are found in high quality, fresh, whole foods — whole grains, legumes, herbs, spices, nuts and seeds provide vitamins and minerals.
Phytonutrients are found in colorful foods — a juicy red tomato, a crispy yellow bell pepper, a crunchy orange carrot and especially a heaping handful of fresh green spinach. Filling your plate with colorful fresh foods is the key to a balanced diet.
